Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal said yesterday it was not only Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who suffers from injustice in Turkey, stating that many suspects in the investigation into Ergenekon, a clandestine criminal network that has alleged links within the state and is suspected of plotting to topple the government, also suffered.

 Baykal's remarks came during his party's parliamentary group meeting yesterday. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the newly constructed Muhsin Ertuğrul Theater in İstanbul over the weekend, Prime Minister Erdoğan complained about the resistance of some circles against his Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government's efforts for the well-being of the country. Erdoğan said his government has been adversely affected by the resistance of these circles.In his speech yesterday, Baykal said he understood Erdoğan, as nobody would like to be accused of doing something wrong when he or she does not deserve it, while calling on Erdoğan to think about the situations of Ergenekon suspects in jail.“The prime minister is suffering; what about [Başkent University Rector and Ergenekon suspect Mehmet] Haberal, [Ergenekon suspect and Cumhuriyet daily columnist Mustafa] Balbay and students of [the late Professor Türkan] Saylan, are they not suffering? One needs to have a conscience first. One should care for other's rights as much as they care for their own,” said Baykal.
